Instructions

Preparation

  • Grate the onion into a bowl with the breadcrumbs and let it sit for a few minutes to soak.
  • Mix the ground beef, garlic, egg, ketchup, bouillon cube, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard with the breadcrumb and onion mixture. Form into oval patties about 3/4 inch thick.

Cooking the Patties

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over high heat. Cook the patties for 1 minute on each side until browned. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, sauté chopped onions and garlic for 2 minutes until translucent. Add sliced mushrooms and cook for another 2-3 minutes until golden.
  • Add butter to the skillet and melt. Stir in flour and cook for 30 seconds. Gradually add beef broth while stirring, and bring to a simmer. Stir in Dijon mustard and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Return the patties to the skillet and cook in the gravy for 5-7 minutes, or until the gravy thickens and the patties are cooked through. Add water to adjust the gravy's consistency if too thick.

Finishing Touch

  • Taste the gravy and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as needed. Serve Salisbury Steaks topped with the mushroom gravy.

Notes

Best served over mashed potatoes. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. Consider adding cream or butter after reheating if freezing the gravy.
