Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground beef Use lean beef (90%+) to avoid excess grease.
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced Use freshly minced garlic for stronger flavor.
  • ¼ cup packed brown sugar To make it sweeter, add a teaspoon of honey.
  • ¼ cup reduced-sodium soy sauce Helps balance the sweetness of the brown sugar.
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes Reduce or omit for less heat.
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups hot cooked white or brown rice Jasmine rice works great for added aroma.
  • to taste sliced green onions and sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions

Preparation

  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and garlic, breaking the meat into small crumbles. Cook until the beef is no longer pink. Drain any excess grease.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the brown sugar, soy sauce, sesame oil, ground ginger, crushed red pepper flakes, and black pepper.
  • Pour the sauce over the cooked beef and stir well. Simmer for 1–2 minutes until slightly thickened and fragrant.
  • Serve the beef mixture over hot rice. Garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions.

Notes

Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat gently in a skillet with a splash of water or soy sauce to keep the beef moist. You can also microwave in 30-second bursts. Freeze the beef mixture (without rice) for up to 2 months. For a lighter version, substitute ground turkey.
